🧭 Not All “Idiots” Are Equal in Japan
While “Baka” is commonly used across Japan to call someone an “idiot,”
in Kansai, “Aho” is the preferred choice — and it’s not nearly as harsh.
In fact, “Aho” can sound warm, friendly, or even affectionate depending on the tone and relationship.
Think of the anime Detective Conan, where Heiji Hattori often says to Kazuha:
“Aho ya na~” — it’s more love than scolding!

🔸そんなアホなこと言わんといて。(Son’na aho na koto iuwantoite)
➡ Don’t say something so silly, will ya~
🔸あいつ、ほんまアホやで。(Aitsu, honma aho ya de.)
➡ He’s totally an “Aho” (but kinda funny though).
💡 If you’re in Kansai and someone does something silly, say “Aho” with a smile — it might win you a friend!
